The counsel of a mentor, especially in the career planning process, is truly invaluable. Not only does mentorship provide a bonded relationship (something that is key to the job search these days), it also provides a resource for knowledge and understanding, as well as motivation and accountability. The average college student may change majors and career paths two, three, maybe four or more times just to get it right. It can be difficult and overwhelming to make a decision that will affect how you live the rest of your life at the age of 18. For this reason, Heritage Christian College offers a free Career Mentorship program to senior high school students and graduates in Ghana.

The Senior High School Students Career Mentorship Program was put in place as a source of support in two main areas: aiding students in discovering their passions and talent in order to determine a career path, and gaining and sustaining confidence in that choice as well as in themselves. The program has set out to combat issues in these areas that are common amongst many people in today’s workforce as studies have shown that those unhappy in their employment do not perform at full potential, consequentially adding new challenges.

Heritage Christian College (HCC) determined that it is important to provide more than mentorship to the students and graduates they work with, so they also provide short courses, with certificates upon completion, for the students to sharpen their skill sets. Course offerings include IT, Business, Entrepreneurship, Bible and Ethics, and Media.

There are nearly 500 senior high schools in both the urban and rural areas of Ghana, and so far, the SHS Career Mentorship Program has worked only been able to work with seven. While that means more than 4,000 senior high school students, imagine the effects of mentorship benefitting the half-million students applying to university in Ghana each year. Members of the HCC SHS Career Mentorship Program are dedicated to bringing this dream to life through meeting the missions of the foundation of entrepreneurship and philanthropy, instilling servant leadership, giving back to the community, and spreading the word about their efforts. Heritage Christian College had also invested in a Director of Student Recruitment and Marketing Officer to help with both increasing awareness in the school’s efforts, and recruit students to enroll. This will create support for the full circle of HCCF’s mission.

The best way to get out of an impoverished life-cycle is education. Combining education and mentorship takes it a step further further by setting up a better life for the generations that follow. With your support, the HCC SHS Career Mentorship Program can expand the footprint of its logistical capabilities, and reach an exponential number of students in Ghana. When such requirements are met, this program can ultimately create a significantly beneficial impact in this young population and create a broader horizon and a brighter future for Ghana’s people and economy.
