High Hopes

For most young people in Africa, earning a college degree is just a dream. But they do dream of an education that would allow them to break the cycle of systemic poverty persisting across West Africa. The lack of opportunity and a sense of hopelessness have established poverty as the norm for many of Africa’s young people. The opportunity to develop key skills and the power of self-belief is a major factor in helping to break this cycle.

With your help, Heritage Christian College Foundation has been able to provide the next generation of Christian leaders in West Africa with the scholarships and resources necessary for a distinctive education.

Education and economic development have a great impact on communities, but an education from Heritage Christian College goes even further by empowering young men and women to be Christ-like leaders, facilitating positive change everywhere they go. Students are not just educated leaders; they are lights for the Kingdom.

This is why equipping the Christian men and women of Ghana with a college education through HCC is so important, and this is why we are so grateful for our generous donors that make our students’ aspirations a reality.

HCC graduates are shining a light across Ghana as business and IT professionals, entrepreneurs, ministers, and bible teachers.

HCC was excited to welcome 74 freshmen this fall, putting our total enrollment at 183! However, with a growing student body comes a growing need. To maintain HCC’s accreditation, and to continue serving its students and values, HCC is required to construct a new academic building on campus, one better equipped to host HCC’s ever-growing student body. The funds for this new building must be raised — and construction started — by the end of 2018, or HCC’s accredited status and future will be called into question.

Looking to the Future

HCC has been an early success and grown accordingly. With the original class now entering their junior year, HCC’s accredited status is now due for a formal government accreditation review, and faces a very serious obstacle. HCC has grown to the point of needing an additional academic building in order to maintain its accreditation or face impediments to further growth imposed by the accreditation review board. Any impediments of this nature will put the timetable for sustained, independent financial stability at risk. This building has become a necessary addition for HCC to meet the requirements being imposed by the accreditation review board. HCCF is using all available channels to raise the funds necessary to avoid a potentially damaging blow to our beloved HCC.

Although our fundraising mission for the end of the year is focused on the facility needed to grow HCC, the main reason for all our efforts are the students. A few HCC students share their story on how this will personally impact their future and the future of others in Ghana:

As the year is coming to an end, help us to raise the funds needed to complete this new facility, and maintain HCC’s accreditation. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by the end of 2017, which we have already raised a portion of thanks to those who contributed on #GivingTuesday.

Giving Tuesday

On the day of #GivingTuesday, Facebook was waiving all donation fees made through their donation tools. Additionally, Facebook along with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation promised to match funds raised on Facebook by nonprofits up to a specified limit. We eagerly embraced this opportunity to propel HCC’s vision forward.

With the help and support of our generous donors, we were able to raise $7,117 for HCC on #GivingTuesday! And, although the $2-million Facebook match ran out less than 30 minutes into #GivingTuesday, we were pleasantly surprised to have received $250 of the match! We were delighted by the support and generosity we received on this day for HCC and hope we can continue toward our goal as 2017 comes to an end.

The Season of Good Cheer

With over $7,000 raised on Giving Tuesday alone, this leaves us at $42,883 left to raise by the end of the year to meet our goal. We know that with our community of generous donors and supporters, we can reach this goal!

December is a month that most would say is filled with holiday cheer, family time, traditions, presents, and snow. Those are all wonderful things, but let’s not forget it’s also a month of giving, fundraising, and volunteering for the special causes near and dear to out hearts.

Did you know that over 30% of annual giving happens in the month of December? People tend to get more involved with nonprofits and charitable organizations over the holidays. It’s undeniable that the average person’s generosity and kindness is magnified during the holiday season. Additionally, the end of the year is an apt time to lighten our taxable income burden, while making a gift at the same time.

As you prayerfully decide where to donate this year, we invite you to be part of shaping the future of Ghana. Every donation will bring blessings and hope to young people and even the smallest amount will make a difference.
